No one has signed Gareth McAuley since his release from Championship outfit West Brom – but Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have been linked.

Gareth McAuley might turn 39 in the first week of December but the fact that no club has decided to snap up the experienced free agent remains something of a surprise.
After all, McAuley started 36 Premier League games as recently as the 2016/17 season, scoring six times for West Brom from centre-back. Clearly, he can still cut it at a very decent level and would be an excellent addition for a side in need of some defensive depth.
A side like Rangers, for instance.
Manager Steven Gerrard told Herald Scotland after the 3-3 draw with Motherwell that he wanted one more centre-back before the transfer window shuts this week. And, fortunately for the former Liverpool skipper, McAuley is still on the market.

According to the Daily Record (live blog, 11.08am), the 79-time Northern Ireland international is open to a move to Scotland. He is in talks with one English club but hopes to be granted a more lucrative contract north of the border.
Rangers have been linked with McAuley all summer. The Daily Record had stated that director of football Mark Allen contacted the former Ipswich Town man about moving to Glasgow on a one-year deal.
McAuley would be a fine signing on the pitch but off it too, where his experience could teach Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic a thing or two.
