Gary Rowett struggled in the Championship with Stoke City but Bruce’s move to Newcastle United might give him another chance.

Gary Rowett is the early frontrunner to replace Steve Bruce at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Mirror (18 July, page 58).
With less than a month until the Championship season kicks off, The Owls have been left in a rather difficult position.
They suddenly find themselves without a manager after Steve Bruce, who only took over in February, walked away from Hillsborough 24 hours before being appointed as Rafa Benitez’s successor at Newcastle United.
Sheffield Wednesday issued a strongly worded statement, expressing their ‘disappointment’ to learn that Bruce had been unveiled while there are ‘outstanding legal issues to be resolved’, as quoted by the Telegraph.
But whatever happens in this rather bitter tale, this should not distract from the fact that the Steel City side need a new manager and fast. Yet Rowett’s availability could play right into their hands.

The 45-year-old was viewed as one of the brightest young coaches in Britain a few years ago after overachieving with Burton and Birmingham City on measure resources. His reputation has taken a hit, however, following disappointing spells at both Derby County and Stoke City.
He failed to guide either The Rams or The Potters to promotion, despite having an experienced and expensive squad at his disposal.
So if Hillsborough really is Rowett’s next destination, this is an appointment that could go either way.
