Fulham made three bids in a failed attempt to bring Club Brugge defender Benoit Poulain to Craven Cottage on transfer deadline day, according to Voetbal Krant.
Having conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League this season (53), it was well documented that Claudio Ranieri’s relegation threatened side were crying out for a new centre-back before the 11pm deadline.
And it seems that Poulain emerged as a genuine target. At the age of 31, the Frenchman fits the ‘experienced’ mould that Fulham seemed to be looking for and has impressed at the heart of a Brugge side sitting second in the Jupiler League table.
According to Voetbal Krant, Fulham made three bids – the largest standing at £1.3 million.
The report adds that Poulain was keen on a move to West London as he saw this as a unique opportunity heading into the autumn days of his career. But he has accepted Brugge’s decision not to sell and is likely to simply get his head down and get on with things.
At least Fulham could console themselves with the loan signing of Havard Nordtveit from Hoffenheim.
