If West Bromwich Albion have their way, a Brazilian international could be plying his trade at The Hawthorns after this month’s transfer deadline.

The Mail reported on Saturday that The Baggies had made a bid of £10 million for Fenerbahce’s Josef de Souza, a defensive midfielder by trade whose versatility could also go some way to easing Tony Pulis’ right-back headache.

Despite keeping two clean sheets in their first two games of the new season, Pulis seems keen to enhance his options at the base of West Brom’s midfield.

The 28-year-old is far from the only deep-lying enforcer to be linked with a move to The Hawthorns this summer with Bild reporting only last week that Wolfsburg’s Joshua Guilavogui was a target.

However, it appears that a move for Souza is far more likely, especially now the report claims that an opening bid has already been made. And, according to Turkish publication Skor, Istanbul giants Fenerbahce are open to the idea of selling one of their key players to the Premier League.

The report claims that Fener will use the money earned from Souza’s sale to make a move for Zenit St Petersburg’s Portuguese international centre-back Luis Neto – a much-needed replacement for Simon Kjaer, who completed a move to Sevilla earlier in the month.

Souza was a regular for Fener in the last two seasons but financial problems mean they may have to sell before they can buy. As recently as May last year, they were fined for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

Therefore, this gives West Brom an excellent chance to land Souza, a three-time Brazil international who featured in 43 games across all competitions last season.
