Swansea City were on the verge of losing captain Fer to Championship rivals Aston Villa on the final day of the January transfer window.

Aston Villa’s move to sign Swansea City midfielder Leroy Fer collapsed on transfer deadline day due to the midfielder’s hamstring injury, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The Dutch international was expected to leave South Wales for Villa Park in the final few hours of the January transfer window, with the 29-year-old arriving at Bodymoor Heath for a medical.

According to the Sun, (3 February, page 61), Fer was due to cost a bargain £2 million with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

But, by the time the transfer window slammed shut, Fer was still a Swansea player with Aston Villa signing his teammate Tom Carroll instead.

And the Birmingham Mail is reporting that Villa were put off due to a hamstring injury that threatened to leave the 29-year-old on the sidelines for some time.

It is understood that Dean Smith’s side were worried about how much time he would miss and claims that they were concerned about his wage demands are apparently wide of the mark.

Fer will be a free agent next summer and the Sun believes that the deal could be revisited at the end of the season.
