Chelsea defender Gary Cahill had reportedly agreed a deal to sign for Premier League neighbours Fulham during the January transfer window.

Gary Cahill seemed almost certain to swap Chelsea for West London rivals Fulham during the January transfer window. But the Mail reported last week that the 33-year-old was suddenly having second thoughts about a move to Craven Cottage.

Why? No one seemed to know at the time.

But Sky Sports have provided an update on Monday which sheds light on the situation and explains why Cahill has not joined up with Claudio Ranieri’s relegation threatened squad.

It is claimed that Fulham had agreed a deal with Chelsea and were planning to bring in Cahill on a short-term contract until the end of the season. And therein lies the issue.

The England international understandably wants a longer deal and appears to have reservations about joining a club seven points adrift from safety on a contract that could see him become a free-agent in just five months’ time.

Although Fulham should surely be willing to alter their stance.

Ranieri’s side saw their defensive deficiencies and a lack of experience brutally laid bare once again on Sunday as they conceded a Harry Winks header in the dying seconds to lose at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
