Josh Onomah spent the 2017/18 Championship season on loan at Aston Villa from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
A number of Aston Villa’s loan signings were instrumental as Steve Bruce’s side reached the Championship play-off final in May.
Sam Johnstone was fantastic between the sticks, Lewis Grabban scored 12 goals in 18 starts while no player in the division assisted more goals than Robert Snodgrass. It is fair to say, however, that Josh Onomah will not be remembered with quite so much nostalgia.
The 21-year-old midfielder arrived from Tottenham in 2017 with a glowing reputation, but succeeded only in frustrating supporters who had expected so much more. In the end, only 20 of Onomah’s 34 appearances came from the start and he was restricted to an increasingly bit-part role as the season progressed.
And despite reports in the Telegraph stating that Spurs were willing to let Onomah make the move to Villa again this summer as part of the deal that would take Jack Grealish to North London, supporters might have seen the last of the England U20 ace after all.
Whether Bruce is disappointed by this remains to be seen. Back in the autumn, the Villa boss said he would happily ‘break the bank’ to sign Onomah permanently, but this was before he lost his form and his place in the side.
