Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City’s Premier League champion Oleksandr Zinchenko despite Wolves’ best efforts.
Oleksandr Zinchenko appeared to be all but set for Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.
The Mail claimed on Friday that the Black Country outfit were close to signing the Ukrainian international from Manchester City for a club-record fee of £16 million, slightly more than they paid for Ruben Neves in the summer of 2017.
That was until Newcastle United entered the race, however.
It has been a frustrating summer once again on Tyneside but the Daily Star claimed that the Magpies had exploded into life by potentially hijacking Wolves’ move for young Premier League champion Zinchenko.
The Star stated that Newcastle are also keen on the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who was turned into a makeshift left-wing back by Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, and could launch a rival bid.
Now, the ball is back in Wolves’ court. And it seems that they are still keen to ensure the former PSV loanee ends up at Molineux.
It is understood that the two clubs are still debating how much Wolves will pay up front to sign him. And, fortunately for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, they surely have the cash reserves to outbid Newcastle if it came down to it.
