Could a boyhood Aston Villa fan be on his way to West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window?

According to The Express and Star, The Baggies are very interested in one of the Championship’s most in-form players, the red-hot Nottingham Forest winger Joe Lolley.

The 26-year-old has scored six goals and produced six assists in the second tier this season and produced arguably the best performance of his career last Wednesday, scoring a 35-yard screamer before setting up four more in the 5-5 draw at Aston Villa.

Now, the Express and Star adds that West Brom’s technical director Luke Dowling would be central to any deal, given that he was the man who brought Lolley to Nottingham Forest from Huddersfield Town 11 months ago.

Joe Lolley of Notts Forest scores to make it 4-3 during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest at Villa Park on November 28, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

But the report adds that The Baggies face an uphill challenge given Lolley’s allegiances to Midland neighbours Villa. Furthermore, Lolley has also established himself as arguably the key man for an in-form Forest side who are level on points with West Brom in the table.

And this is without mentioning the fact that a number of Premier League sides are also understood to be interested. The Mirror (live blog, 4.42pm) reports that Newcastle United and Fulham are keen while The Mail has also linked Watford and Cardiff City.

So could Dowling miss out on a man he knows very well?
