With just a few weeks remaining in the 2018/19 season, the future of Rafa Benitez remains up in the air with the Spaniard’s contract due to expire in the near future.
Although talks are ongoing, it would be no surprise if the former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss walked away due to a seemingly strained relationship with owner Mike Ashley, who has frequently failed to back his manager in the transfer market.
The Chronicle believes that Rodgers was very interested in replacing Benitez at Tyneside as he has a real admiration for the Magpies.
Obviously, he will not be making the move north any time soon, however, having taken over at Leicester just two months ago.
After a trophy-laden spell at Celtic which included successive domestic trebles, Rodgers has made a huge impact at a Leicester side who looked a shadow of their former selves under the much-maligned Claude Puel.
