Brentford manager Dean Smith seemed to dismiss interest in taking over at Championship crisis-club Aston Villa.
Aston Villa have cast their net far and wide in their search for a new manager.
The Midland club sacked Steve Bruce on Wednesday after a run of one win in ten games and have been linked with a wide array of talented coaches in the last two days.
According to the Mail, Jorge Mendes’ influence at Villa Park mean Paulo Fonseca and Carlos Carvalhal are on the club’s radar while Graham Potter of Swansea and Rafael Benitez of Newcastle United are also under consideration.
But one name that simply is not going away is Dean Smith.
The highly-rated Brentford boss is known to be a keen Aston Villa fan and he has done a terrific job at Griffin Park, turning the Bees into one of the most free-flowing and exciting teams in the Championship.
Smith appeared to distance himself from the job on Thursday, telling Express and Star; “They put two and two together and come up with five. My job is Brentford and that’s all I am interested in.”
But he was never going to express an interest publicly. And, according to the Birmingham Mail, Smith would indeed be interested in taking over his boyhood club if an official offer is put on the table.
With Championship experience, passion and a penchant for exciting attacking football, Smith ticks a lot of boxes.
