Report: Everton’s Calvert-Lewin targeted for January loan by Premier League clubs

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has lost his place in Everton’s starting XI but will stay at Goodison Park for the rest of the 2017/18 season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had probably not expected to play such a huge rule in the first half of Everton’s season.

But thanks to the departure of Romelu Lukaku, and the Toffees’ baffling failure to find a replacement striker in the summer, the former Sheffield United youngster was suddenly catapulted into the role of first-choice striker.

And he did okay considering the circumstances. In 16 Premier League starts, Calvert-Lewin has three goals and four assists, his movement, pace and unselfish willingness to lead the line making him somewhat un-droppable in the first few months of the campaign.

The same cannot be said now, however. Everton finally spent big to reinforce a thin front line in January, buying a typical number nine in Cenk Tosun and a wide forward in Theo Walcott who is more than capable of playing down the middle.

Calvert-Lewin now has not started a Premier League game in 2018. Although it appears that he still has an important role to play under Sam Allardyce.

Because the Liverpool Echo reports that Everton turned down loan offers from at least one Premier League club who were hoping to take advantage of his inevitable slide down the pecking order.

There are plenty of sides lower down the table who would happily welcome a player with Calvert-Lewin’s physical and technical attributes in attack, plus his versatility to play anywhere across the frontline. And it is understood that a number of top flight teams had enquired about taking him on loan for the rest of the campaign.

But Everton fans who were worrying about the 20-year-old being reduced to a bit-part role should fear not. If Calvert-Lewin was not needed at Goodison, the club would not have been so quick to turn down those offers.
