Premier League giants Everton might have picked the worst possible time to scout Manchester United’s Luke Shaw as Jose Mourinho hooked him at half-time.

Jose Mourinho’s very public criticism of Luke Shaw has clubs from all around the Premier League ready and waiting to snap up the £20 million-rated outcast.

Chelsea, Tottenham and former club Southampton have been linked but Everton, whose search for a long-term Leighton Baines successor has been well-documented, appear to be putting plans in place for a summer move.

ESPN claim that the Toffees sent scouts to watch Shaw during Manchester United’s FA Cup clash against Brighton on Saturday and the 22-year-old, who is over a decade younger than Baines, clearly has all the natural attributes to succeed the long-serving former Wigan Athletic star.

But Everton might have picked the wrong day to watch Shaw in action.

After all, he was hooked at half-time by a very unimpressed Mourinho after a difficult first 45 against the Seagulls.

“Luke, in the first half, every time they went in this (left-hand) corridor, the cross was coming, the situation was coming so I was not happy with the performance,” Mourinho said in quotes reported by the Independent, while criticising Shaw’s lack of aggression and suspect defensive positioning.

These are all points that Everton must consider when they decide whether or not to pay the £20 million required to sign a player with a history of injury problems and a supposedly questionable attitude, particularly with many other quality left-backs on the market.
