Everton have decided to release striker Boris Mathis when his contract expires in the summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The French striker joined Everton in 2017 from Metz during Steve Walsh’s spell as the club’s director of football but, like many of the former Leicester scout’s signings, he failed to make a positive contribution during a frustrating spell in England.

Mathis has failed to force his way into the Toffees’ first-team plans and his time on British shores was summed up by a forgettable loan spell at Northampton Town, where he failed to score in seven appearances.

The Cobblers cut short his time at the club in August, with manager Dean Austin seemingly accusing Mathis of a lack of commitment, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

It is claimed that Everton have been hoping to sell the 21-year-old for a while but are now set to release him when his contract runs out in July.

The one-time Lyon youngster has had spells with a number of French clubs, according to the Echo, but has not yet found a team willing to offer him a fresh start.
