Report: Everton in talks with Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho over £40m deal

Sporting Lisbon are finally set to lose William Carvalho with Everton reportedly keen to take him to the Premier League.

For as long as memory will allow, Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho has been linked with a move to the Premier League.

And, with the 2018 summer transfer window almost upon us, this could be the year when the Portuguese international finally bids farewell to the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Because A Bola is reporting that Carvalho, who has been an integral part of Sporting’s first-team since the 2013/14 season, wants to leave this summer and embark on the next chapter in his career.

And it is understood that Everton have held talks about signing the 26-year-old, who is valued a little under his release clause at £40 million; potentially making him the second most expensive player in the Toffees’ history after Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Central midfield is arguably the strongest position in Everton’s squad on paper, but Morgan Schneiderlin has been inconsistent this season while Tom Davies would perhaps benefit from a more advanced role.

So the addition of Carvalho, a classy and composed operator who starred as Portugal won Euro 2016, would represent an immediate upgrade in the centre of the park.

A Bola reports that Inter Milan are also keen but, with the Nerazzurri set to miss out on Champions League football, Financial Fair Play could well scupper the deal.

Monaco are interested too and a move to France might interest Carvalho, given the club’s history when it comes to helping talented players realise their potential.
