Ivan Marcano is out of contract at Porto at the end of the season and could leave in January with Everton keen.
The January transfer window can’t come soon enough for Everton after a disastrous start to the season. As it stands, The Toffees are out of the EFL Cup and the Europa League while sitting 16th in the Premier League without a manager in the dugout.
But at least Everton are reportedly taking strides to fill the gaps in their lopsided squad in January.
Portuguese publication A Bola reported in September that the Merseysiders made a last-gasp summer move for FC Porto defender Ivan Marcano. And O Jogo is now claiming that Everton will return with a fresh approach in the New Year.
While a lack of a reliable goalscorer has been one of the major factors in Everton’s struggles this season, problems are the other end of the pitch are arguably even more concerning. That a 5-1 defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday, the biggest home defeat suffered by an English side in the history of the competition, came as little surprise speaks volumes.
Unlike Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka or the abysmal Ashley Williams, however, Marcano has been in good form this season. The Spaniard has started all 12 Primeira Liga fixtures for a rejuvenated Porto side who sit five points clear at the top under highly-rated manager Sergio Conceicao.
The Spaniard, who has featured regularly in the Champions League in recent seasons, will be a free agent next summer and has shown no interest as of yet in signing a new deal.
The report claims that both Valencia and Inter Milan are keen and, with the duo flying high in Spain and Italy, Everton may face a challenge luring Marcano to Goodison Park.
But if they do, they will have taken a major step towards solving their defensive problems.
