With just a week of the Premier League season remaining, Stoke City have become the first side to taste the bitter pill of relegation.

A 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday brought an end to ten years in the top flight for the Potters, and has surely paved the way for Xherdan Shaqiri to depart this summer.

Swiss publication Blick reports that Shaqiri will play his final game for the club against Swansea City on the final day of the Premier League season next Sunday. And, interestingly, the report states that the Switzerland winger will be available at a bargain fee as there is a £12 million release clause in his contract.

This is the first time such a clause has been mentioned, although there may be a chance that it only became active once Stoke’s relegation was confirmed.

So Everton, who Blick report are at the front of the queue to sign Shaqiri this summer, should have a far easier decision to make when considering bringing him to Goodison Park.

The 26-year-old tends to blow hot and cold but he has still scored or assisted 14 league goals for a relegated side, while his pace and unpredictability would make him a fine addition for an Everton side lacking a cutting edge in the final third.

For £12 million, Shaqiri would be a real bargain in today’s market.
