Morten Thorsby was reportedly wanted by Premier League duo Everton and Watford, plus Boro, before leaving Heerenveen for Sampdoria.

Morten Thorsby’s move from Heerenveen to Sampdoria understandably didn’t get much coverage in the UK.

After a fine run of form in the Eredivisie, the Norwegian midfielder came to an agreement with the Serie A club and will move to the Genoa-based outfit at the end of the current campaign.

But, according to TEAMtalk, two Premier League clubs and one from the Championship have been left disappointed. Everton and Watford had reportedly expressed an interest in Thorsby while Middlesbrough were close to securing a deal that would have seen the 22-year-old move to Riverside.

It is understood that Boro chairman Steve Gibson had stepped up his pursuit and had progressed talks with Thorsby’s representatives but will now have to scour the market for alternative targets.

But what did Everton, Watford and Middlesbrough miss out on?

Well, Thorsby is not one of the most hyped players in the Eredivisie but he is a solid and intelligent midfielder with an eye for goal. He has five already this season, one fewer than his tally for the entire 2018/19 campaign, and is renowned for his fine aerial ability.
