Nottingham Forest need to make some big changes this summer if they are to avoid another season of underachievement and finally push themselves into play-off contention.

According to the Nottingham Post, manager Aitor Karanka wants to keep a number of the loanees who arrived in January and made a major impact at the City Ground.

Jack Colback and Costel Pantilimon added quality in midfield and between the sticks when joining from Newcastle United and Watford respectively while Tobias Figueiredo made a real impact at centre-half and, according to Record, has already sealed a £2 million permanent transfer from Sporting Lisbon.

Forest would love to keep the enigmatic Lee Tomlin, too. Although the 29-year-old is keen to prove himself in the Premier League, the Post adds, so a return to parent club Cardiff City may be his top priority.

But according to the Nottingham Post, there is one Forest loanee the club will bid farewell to this summer for definite – Kieran Dowell.

Kieran Dowell of Nottingham Forest shoots during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Chelsea and Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on September 19, 2017 in London, England.

When you consider that the nine-goal midfielder was Forest’s top scorer in 2017/18, the fact that they seem keen to send him back to Goodison Park seems a little odd. But the 20-year-old’s form dipped dramatically once Karanka replaced Mark Warburton at the turn of the year and he has been a peripheral figure in the last few months.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Dowell has done enough to force his way into Everton’s first-team plans this summer.

He has shown moments of real class at Forest, particularly when netting a first ever career hat-trick at Hull City, but consistency has remained elusive.
