Premier League giants Everton have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga left-back Wendell in this summer’s transfer window.

There is yet another name on Everton’s ever-lengthening list of left-back targets. And this one could be the most expensive yet.

According to Sky Sports, Everton are keen on Bayer Leverkusen’s Brazilian flyer Wendell with the 24-year-old lined up as yet another potential successor for the veteran Leighton Baines.

Wendell moved to Germany from Gremio in 2014 and has now established himself as Leverkusen’s first-choice left-back. He made 26 Bundesliga starts last season as Heiko Herrlich’s side narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification, scoring twice and setting up three more.

Wendell is not the first Bundesliga left-back linked with Everton. Sky Sports add that the Toffees are also tracking Hertha Berlin’s German international Marvin Plattenhardt, a set-peice specialist who is almost a carbon copy of Baines himself, though Leicester City appear to be hi-jacking the deal.

It is unknown how much Plattenhardt would cost but he would certainly be cheaper than Wendell, who the Mail believe is valued at £32 million with three years left on his contract. This would make Wendell the most expensive defender in Everton’s history, exceeding the £30 million they paid Burnley for Michael Keane a year ago.

And while Wendell has plenty of potential and time on his side, £32 million seems like an eye-watering fee for a player who is far from proven at the top level at the moment. There are definitely players of equal quality available for much less.
