Report discloses Sunderland’s plans for striker Andrew Nelson

Andrew Nelson is reportedly a target for a number of clubs but does he have a future at League One Sunderland?

Sunderland are still a little short of cash despite gaining new owners, so the club’s raft of young talent will be key to getting them out of League One this season at the first time of asking.

The Black Cats already boast two exciting forwards in Josh Maja and Joel Asoro and the Sunderland Echo believes another will be given the chance to prove himself in pre-season – Andrew Nelson.

A 20-year-old born in nearby Stockton-on-Tees, Nelson spent the second half of last season on loan at Falkirk and obviously caught the eye of new Sunderland manager Jack Ross, who was in charge of Scottish Championship rivals St Mirren until recently.

Nelson scored four goals and set up three more for Falkirk and, speaking to the Chronicle, Nelson stated that he wanted the chance to prove himself on Wearside rather than go out on loan for another few months.

“It’s obviously not great for the football club to be down in League One but for me being selfish I’ve got to see it as a good opportunity and a good level for me to get a chance to show what I can do for Sunderland, and then progress from there,” Nelson, who has not yet made his senior bow for Sunderland, said.

“League One tends to be like a rough league. It’s all about battling and doing the running and really getting down to the gritty side of the game. I’ve always thought that will suit me.”

And it seems the striker will get his wish.

Ross showed during his time at St Mirren that he is capable of getting the best out of young players, such as Lewis Morgan and Stephen Mallan, so Nelson should be confident that he will be given a chance to shine as Sunderland prepare for life in League One.
