As report discloses Wilfried Zaha’s price-tag, have Tottenham missed their chance?

Spurs have wanted to sign Wilfried Zaha from Premier League and London rivals Crystal Palace since the summer of 2016.

You could make a case for Wilfried Zaha being the best player in the Premier League outside of the established ‘top six’ right now.

The 25-year-old is in the form of his life for Crystal Palace, following up last season’s stunning performances with a number of point-clinching displays to drag Roy Hodgson’s side up the table and within touching distance of the top half.

And with four-and-a-half years still remaining on Zaha’s contract, Palace are within their rights to demand ‘silly money’ with the one-time Manchester United winger once again lined up by some of England’s biggest clubs.

The Sun (21^st January, page 64) reports that long-standing suitors Tottenham are keen to finally bring Zaha to North London – but will face competition from local rivals Arsenal.

Although you wonder whether Spurs have left it too late to step up their pursuit of the Ivory Coast international. Because Palace reportedly value Zaha at £50 million; a fee that is surely the result of this inflated transfer market.

And this comes just a year after The Sun reported that Tottenham were hoping to sign Zaha for £25 million. They had a £15 million offer rejected a few months prior.

It is testament both to Zaha’s ever-increasing influence and new-found consistency, as well as the dramatic rise of transfer fees, that his price-tag has now doubled in the space of just 12 months.

And, unlike the Manchester giants and Chelsea to a lesser extent, Spurs do not have £50 million just lying around. Palace’s huge asking price, then, will be a real test of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s willingness to back manager Mauricio Pochettino.
