Championship giants Leeds United reportedly believe they are close to a deal for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez

Leeds United are closing in on their first signing of the summer and what a signing it will be.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds look set to finally replace Chris Wood by signing one of the Championship’s most feared strikers, Abel Hernandez, from Hull City.

Hernandez has decided to leave Humberside upon the expiry of his contract and Leeds are in advanced talks with the Uruguayan, who scored eight goals in just eight starts during an injury-hit 2017/18 season.

It is understood that Leeds have been negotiating with the 27-year-old’s agent for the past month and are prepared to finance a contract which will match the £40,000-a-week he earns at Hull. Consequently, Hernandez will be comfortably the best paid player at Elland Road.

And the YEP believes that Leeds, who believe they are at the front of the queue to seal the deal, are set to include a clause in Hernandez’s contract which could make a move to Leeds even more tempting.

His contract is expected to include a release clause which would allow Hernandez to depart next summer should Leeds, who finished 13^th in the Championship last season, fail to put together a genuine promotion bid.

This should lessen the risks of a move to West Yorkshire for a player who does appear to have Premier League offers on the table from Wolves and Newcastle United.

The hope will be, however, that Hernandez’s Championship track record will give Leeds the impetus to challenge for a place in the top six next season – and that release clause will never come into effect.
