Championship Derby County and Wolves are expected to battle for promotion next season but could the future of Dominic Iorfa play a major role?
While Wolves fans may be waiting with baited breath to discover whether record signing Helder Costa will move on to bigger and better things this summer, it appears the club should beware another key man jumping ship from Molineux.
The Express and Star reports that talented defender Dominic Iorfa is a transfer target for Championship rivals Derby County this summer. The 21-year-old England youth international would command a fee of £4 million.
However, that is unlikely to put off a side who are no strangers to making big statement signings.
Iorfa has been far from consistent this season but has still offered the odd glimpse of potential that marks him out as one of the country’s most exciting defensive talents.
Strong in the air, a fearsome tackler and able to play at right-back or centre-half, Iorfa would represent an astute first signing by recently appointed Derby boss Gary Rowett.
Risky move
The question, however, is whether Wolves would, or indeed should, let one of their prized assets move to a Championship rival.
Backed by wealthy Chinese owners who have enabled the club to smash their transfer record twice since taking over last summer, Wolves clearly don’t need the money.
And they have made clear that their ambition is to fight for a place in the Premier League. Therefore, if all goes to plan, both Wolves and Derby will be going head-to-head for promotion next season.
Though Iorfa has been in and out of manager Paul Lambert’s starting XI this season, his potential is undoubted. Wolves will surely not want him to fulfil it at Pride Park.
