Formerly on the books of Middlesbrough, Trevor Clarke could return to England with Derby County in January.
At the age of just 19, it appears that Trevor Clarke has already outgrown the relatively modest surroundings of the League of Ireland.
According to the league’s official website, Championship side Derby County are interested in offering the teenage defender the next step in his promising young career.
Clarke, who represents the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level, stood out last season for Shamrock Rovers, impressing at either left-back or in central midfield.
He featured 27 times and also played in the Europa League qualifying rounds. And Clarke was rewarded for a fine breakthrough campaign by winning the PFAI Young Player of the Year award.
The report, however, states that Derby could land one of the most highly-rated young players in Ireland for a bargain fee with Shamrock expected to ask for about £420,000 for their prized asset.
A January move to Pride Park would mark a return to England for Clarke, who previously spent time on the books of Middlesbrough. And, per the Derby Telegraph, he has previously stated his desire to return to the country.
Clarke did not stay for long at The Riverside but, with his reputation rising, it remains to be seen whether Garry Monk will make an attempt to bring him back to the North East.
As it stands, however, Boro’s loss could be Derby’s gain with Gary Rowett’s side apparently nearing a deal. Derby are hardly short of options at left-back with Craig Forsyth, Marcus Olsson, Max Lowe and Chris Baird all on the club’s books.
For whatever reason, however, it seems that this is a position Derby want to strengthen with The Rams recently linked with Reading’s Omar Richards and Dundee United’s Jamie Robson.
