Port Vale want to sign Callum Guy on loan after an impressive loan spell but it appears that Derby County want to keep him around a little longer.

Callum Guy’s only appearances in a Derby County shirt last season were in the much-maligned Checkatrade Trophy.

As such, the 20-year-old is still waiting to make his league bow for The Rams and speculation that Port Vale wanted to sign him permanently after an impressive loan spell cast doubt on his chances of making a mark for the club he joined at the age of nine, the Derby Telegraph reports.

However, starring in his 11 appearances for The Valiants before a hamstring injury cut his season short in March and prevented him from keeping the club from being relegated to League Two, it appears that Guy has kept his Derby dreams alive.

According to the Derby Telegraph, hands-on chairman Mel Morris has been impressed with Guy’s development in recent months and sees a bright future for him at Pride Park.

Though it remains to be seen whether manager Gary Rowett shares the same viewpoint. The Nottingham-born midfielder had been farmed out to Port Vale two months before the highly-rated coach was appointed at Derby, after all.

Promisingly, however, Rowett appears to be embracing the ‘if you are good enough, you are old enough mantra’.

“It doesn’t matter if you are 32 or whether you are 19. If you show desire to be part of the team and be unselfish in terms of the way you play, you will be a part of the squad,” the former Birmingham boss told the Derby Telegraph.

Furthermore, with loanee Julien de Sart returning to Middlesbrough after a disappointing five-month spell, there is further place in the squad for an energetic midfielder like Guy next season.
