Edson Alvarez could be heading to the Premier League with Crystal Palace or to the Eredivisie as Matthijs de Ligt’s replacement at Ajax.

Edson Alvarez of Mexico bites his medal after wining the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 final match between United States and Mexico at Soldier Field on July 7, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

Crystal Palace are interested in signing Mexico’s Gold Cup winning midfielder Edson Alvarez, according to De Telegraaf – but it’s fair to say they are not short of competition.

At the age of just 21, it seems only a matter of time before the Club America ace follows in the footsteps of international team-mates Hirving Lozano, Diego Lainez and Erik Gutierrez by sealing a move to Europe.

De Telegraaf reports that Eredivisie champions Ajax wanted Alvarez to replace club captain Matthijs de Ligt. But with the 19-year-old’s transfer saga rumbling on, the Champions League semi-finalists could be pipped to the post by one of three English suitors.

West Ham United are interested while Wolverhampton Wanderers apparently sent their representatives to America to tie up a deal for Alvarez during Mexico’s triumphant Gold Cup campaign.

The youngster started in the centre of midfield as Tata Martino’s side beat the USA 1-0 in the tournament final last night.

Edson Alvarez #4 of Mexico takes down Christian Pulisic #10 of the United States at Soldier Field on July 07, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

And De Telegraaf have added Crystal Palace into the mix for the first time. It is no secret that Roy Hodgson’s side want a new centre-half and the commanding yet classy Alvarez could fill in comfortably at the back, even though he’s played much of his football in a more advanced role since the turn of the year.

Alvarez is expected to cost £13 million. But, given his versatility and potential, he could be worth every penny.
