Report: Crystal Palace tell Newcastle how much to pay for Townsend

Newcastle United reportedly had a bid of £20m to bring Andros Townsend back to St James’ Park rejected by Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

The potential return of Andros Townsend has almost split the Newcastle United fanbase down the middle.

The England winger was fantastic in his 13 games for the Magpies in the second half of the 2015/16 season. Townsend did everything he could (including scoring a wonderful free-kick winner against Crystal Palace) to keep Newcastle in the Premier League, although that eventually proved fruitless.

And once Newcastle’s relegation was confirmed, Townsend jumped ship. He joined Palace for £13 million and this seemed to sour his legacy at St James’ Park.

Nonetheless, this does not appear to have stopped Rafa Benitez from attempting to spark a reunion with the 26-year-old. The Mirror reported earlier this month that Newcastle had gone as far as to make a £20 million bid for Townsend.

The report added that Palace wanted more money for the 13-time England international. And now we know precisely how much more.

As reported by the Times, the Eagles have slapped a £30 million price-tag on Townsend’s head. And it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are willing to raise their initial offer by another £10 million.

Owner Mike Ashley had publicly stated that he would back Benitez in the transfer market, but there has been little sign of that so far. No new players have arrived and a £30 million deal for Townsend would likely have to be funded via player sales.
