Forget Xhedan Shaqiri and Leander Dendoncker, Ferland Mendy might just be Crystal Palace’s most ambitious transfer target of the summer.

According to Spanish paper Sport, Roy Hodgson’s Eagles are a big fan of the 22-year-old Lyon left-back. He might not be a household name in England but he has been an absolute revelation in France over the last year.

Mendy arrived at Lyon in June from Le Havre for a fee of around £5 million and has made the left-back position his own in Bruno Genesio’s side, setting up five goals in the French top flight.

In fact, the athletic youngster was so impressive that he was included in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season alongside the likes of Nabil Fekir, Edinson Cavani and Neymar.

Though, according to Sport, Palace are facing a rather daunting rival – Barcelona.

It is understood that the La Liga champions have identified Mendy, whose style is very similar to his Manchester City namesake, has been identified as a possible replacement for fellow Frenchman Lucas Digne at the Camp Nou.

Sport claims that Ernesto Valverde is a big fan of Mendy, who is renowned for his speed and aggression in attack. And the report goes as far as to suggest that he is likely to be wearing the colours of Barcelona next season.

So it remains to be seen whether Crystal Palace have missed their chance.
