Crystal Palace’s director of football Dougie Freedman is at the heart of an attempt to bring the talented young midfielder Dru Yearwood to Selhurst Park in the New Year.

Palace legend Freedman finished his playing career at Roots Hall. And, according to The Sun (30 October, page 59), Freedman has been keeping a close eye on Yearwood’s progress at Southend for quite a while now, having been given the inside track on the 18-year-old’s development thanks to his connections at the third tier outfit.

Yearwood made his league debut for Southend just over a year ago and has been a regular for The Shrimpers ever since. He has started six League One games this season and was called up by England’s U18s for the first time in May.

The Sun adds that Crystal Palace are currently leading the race to bring Yearwood to the Premier League with the youngster set to make the step up after proving himself at lower league level.

Roy Hodgson’s side reportedly believe that he has a big future and can develop long-term at Selhurst Park.
