Crystal Palace are crying out for a new goalkeeper and PSV’s Jeroen Zoet is on their radar, although Benfica want him, too.
If Frank de Boer wanted a new goalkeeper before the weekend, Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Swansea City will not have changed his mind.
The frequently flappable Wayne Hennessey did little to win over his new boss by failing to cut out a simple through ball against Paul Clement’s side, gifting Jordan Ayew the game-clinching second goal just minutes after half-time.
Though capable of the odd wondersave, the Welsh international is far from a reliable presence between the sticks and Steve Mandanda’s return to Marseille this summer means reinforcements would be welcomed at Selhurst Park.
And Dutch paper Brabants Dagblad report that PSV Eindhoven shot-stopper Jeroen Zoet remains a possible addition before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.
However, reported competition from Benfica, Portuguese title winners who will be taking part in the Champions League this season, means concluding a deal for the two-time Eredivisie champion will be far from straightforward for Palace.
Yet, this is where the money-spinning power of the Premier League comes in. Because the report claims that Benfica are fully aware that it would be almost impossible to make a more financially attractive offer than Palace.
Consequently, the report adds that the Lisbon giants are leaning towards alternative targets. A Bola claimed recently that Newcastle United outcast Tim Krul and Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky were more attractive options.
Therefore, Palace may have the advantage as De Boer chases a goalkeeper he knows all too well from his time in charge of PSV’s eternal rivals, Ajax.
The Sun (20 August, page 59) reported that Zoet sees his immediate future in England and lists Palace as favourites for the £6 million-rated Dutch international.
