Report: Club Brugge desperate to keep Southampton loanee Jordy Clasie

Southampton’s forgotten man Jordy Clasie could be playing Champions League football next season, having found form since leaving the Premier League.

You will not find too many Southampton fans losing sleep about Jordy Clasie’s inevitable and eventual departure from St Mary’s.

The Saints looked to have pulled off a real coup when they signed the Dutch international, who had been heavily linked with Manchester United, from Feyenoord for a fee of £8 million in the summer of 2015, as reported by the BBC.

But Clasie never adapted to English football, playing just 38 Premier League games in two seasons, and was shunted out on loan to Club Brugge in Belgium last summer.

Fortunately for the Saints, however, their hopes of finding a buyer for Clasie in the next few months will surely have been boosted by his impressive displays over in Brugge this season. The Blue Blacks are 11 points clear at the top of the table with the 26-year-old appearing 15 times.

And according to Belgian paper HLN, Brugge would jump at the chance to keep Clasie next season with a title defence a Champions League campaign hopefully on the agenda.

It is understood that Brugge would only want to loan Clasie for another season – and it remains to be seen whether Southampton will agree to their demands, as surely now would be the time to cash in with the forgotten man finding his form again.

“I am happy with Brugge after a horrible spell in England,” Clasie told The Sun back in January.

“I won’t forget the fact that Brugge gave me the chance to relaunch my career after a difficult spell.”

Clasie has no future on the South Coast, and maybe now is the time for Southampton to cut their losses on the midfielder and allow him to spend another year on loan in Belgium, rather than wait around for a buyer that might never arrive.
