Mauricio Pochettino’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has come under question after a difficult start to the Premier League season.

Chelsea made an approach for Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino before they handed club legend Frank Lampard the keys to Stamford Bridge, as reported by the Sun.

After cutting his managerial teeth at Derby County, the Blues’ all-time record goalscorer returned to West London this summer to take over a club he led to three Premier League titles during a trophy-laden playing career.

It has been far from a dream homecoming so far, however, with Lampard winning just three of his nine games at the helm. But with the 41-year-old introducing the sort of free-flowing attacking football that Roman Abramovic craves, not to mention providing a platform for the next generation of Chelsea superstars, there is plenty of goodwill on the terraces.

Yet it all could have been oh so different if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had not been so determined to keep Pochettino in North London.

The Sun claims that Chelsea were hoping to lure the Argentine to Stamford Bridge but Levy was never going to let his most prized asset, who has a £32 million price-tag on his head, leave for a direct Premier League rival.

Whether Pochettino sees out the season, however, is another matter entirely. Spurs look further than every away from challenging for the Premier League title and, with a number of key players seemingly on their way out in the near future, this feels like the end of an era.
