League One challengers Sunderland are reportedly hoping to sign Celtic’s seldom-seen Scottish Premiership defender Jack Hendry in January.
Jack Hendry’s days at Celtic appear to be numbered. At least for the time being.
The 21-year-old defender has paid the price for a difficult first few months at Parkhead by tumbling down the pecking order, making just three Scottish Premiership appearances this season.
And, according to the Northern Echo, Celtic had held talks with Sunderland about a deal that would see Hendry move to the Stadium of Light on loan for the second half of the campaign.
Brendan Rodgers is understood to have a close relationship with Sunderland counterpart Jack Ross, which stands the League One side in good stead.
But latest reports from the Northern Echo have pointed out that the former Dundee man, who moved to Celtic for £1.5 million a year ago, is not the Black Cats’ top target.
Hendry is keen on a move to the North East but Ross would prefer to sign a right-back first, after an injury suffered by Adam Matthews forced Luke O’Nien into an unfamiliar role of late.
Scotland international Hendry has played at right-back for Celtic on occasions but he is far from a natural in the position and, in truth, he looked like something of a square peg in a round hole.
With Ross looking for a player who can make the right-back role his own, Hendry could be left in limbo for the time being. It seems that Sunderland will only make a move for a centre-half when they have a new full-back on board.
