Scottish Premiership champions Celtic want to beat a number of Premier League sides to Jack Hendry but won’t pay Dundee £1.5m.

£1.5 million is not a lot of money in today’s transfer market, particularly for a young, up-and-coming centre-back who could cost ten times as much in a year or two’s time.

But ever since Dundee slapped that £1.5 million price-tag on the head of highly-rated defender Jack Hendry, speculation surrounding his future has grown somewhat cold.

The Mail reported in early December that Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Southampton were all keen on the 22-year-old, who has been likened to John Stones for his ball-playing style.

Scottish champions Celtic are also big fans but, after having a £500,000 bid rejected after Christmas, were reluctant to treble their bid to bring Hendry to Parkhead.

But according to the Scottish Sun, Dundee may now have to lower their asking price in order to earn the best possible sum for a player whose value may only depreciate from hear on in with just 18 months remaining on his contract.

It is understood that a Celtic side on the lookout for more defenders are keeping tabs on a player Brendan Rodgers described as outstanding as Dundee narrowly lost 1-0 at Parkhead in October.

Celtic's head coach Brendan Rodgers talks during a press conference in Brussels on September 26, 2017 on the eve of the Champions League group B) football match against RSC Anderlecht.

And it seems that Dundee have accepted that they need to reduce their £1.5 million demands.

In an ideal world, the Dens Park side would be able to keep hold of Hendry and ask for far more in the summer. But his contract situation means that may not be a possibility.
