Report: Celtic renew interest in Lennart Thy, three years after failed approach

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic did not manage to lure Lennart Thy to Parkhead when he was playing in the 2.Bundesliga for St Pauli.

Celtic look like they will be in the market for a new striker this summer.

It seems unlikely that Moussa Dembele will still be at the club next season, while a deal to make Odsonne Edouard’s loan from PSG permanent has still not been struck. So it seems the Hoops have decided to have a look around Europe and see what else is on offer.

And according to German publication 90min.de, Celtic sent scouts to watch VVV-Venlo’s Eredivisie clash with FC Twente on Saturday with former German youth striker Lennart Thy the reason for their trip.

The 26-year-old did not score at the weekend as the game finished 0-0, but he has enjoyed a decent season in the Dutch top flight on loan from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. In total, Thy has hit seven goals in 28 games, including a hat-trick against Heracles on Christmas Eve.

Although Thy is not a household name in Glasgow, he might be somewhat familiar to some Celtic supporters. Because this is not the first time the Scottish Premiership champions have been linked with the 6ft front man.

The Daily Record claimed in December 2015 that Celtic had been very impressed with his form in the German second tier for St Pauli, especially after he netted four goals in front of their scouts against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Thy stayed at St Pauli, however, before joining Werder Bremen that following summer.

But with 90min.de believing that Thy will struggle for chances at Bremen next season, there is a chance that Celtic could finally get their man.
