Scottish Premiership giants Rangers paid £2.2m to sign Mexican international Carlos Pena but he struggled to settle at Ibrox.

Rangers fans might not have expected to see Carlos Pena in Glasgow again. The Mexican midfielder appeared to be finished at Ibrox when he was loaned out to Cruz Azul in January – but, in a shock twist of fate, Pena is reportedly on his way back to Scotland.

That is according to Medio Tiempo anyway.

After a brief and unsuccessful spell at Cruz Azul, Pena moved to Liga MX rivals Necaxa on another temporary deal but he has struggled to get his career back on track in his homeland.

The 29-year-old has featured just five times for Necaxa and has been left out of the match day squad for each of their last two games. As a result, it has been claimed that Necaxa have decided to part company with Pena and cancel a loan deal that was due to run until January.

Rangers paid £2.2 million to sign Pena in the summer of 2017 during the reign of Pedro Caixinha and he still has 18 months left on his £20,000-a-week contract, as reported by the Daily Record.

It has been a horrible year for Pena both on and off the pitch. He has been heavily criticised by fans over in Mexico for his below-par performances and, according to the Record, voluntarily checked himself into a rehab a few months ago to recover from alcohol addiction.

Pena did show a few flashes of quality in his brief spell in a Rangers shirt, scoring four times in 12 league games with his ability to time runs into the box proving a useful weapon. But it remains to be seen whether Steven Gerrard will try and get a tune out of him.
