Matthew Connolly hasn’t made a Premier League apperance for Cardiff since their promotion and will return to the Championship with Nigel Adkins’ Tigers.
Hull City manager Nigel Adkins confirmed on Thursday that the Tigers were closing in on a deal to bring a Premier League centre-back to Humberside. And now his identity has been revealed.
According to the Hull Daily Mail, Cardiff City’s Matthew Connolly is understood to be on his way to the Championship high-flyers as a replacement for Tommy Elphick, who returned to Aston Villa recently after they cut his loan spell at the KCom Stadium short.
31-year-old Connolly, who has been told he can leave Cardiff, is reported to be keen on a move to Hull having failed to make a single Premier League appearance since Neil Warnock’s side were promoted back to the top flight.
The Barnet-born defender has a wealth of Championship experience, having represented Reading, Queens Park Rangers and Watford in the second tier.
He was also named Cardiff’s Player of the Year at the end of the 2015/16 season.
And he is now expected to join a Hull side who have dramatically gone from relegation candidates to play-off dark horses in recent weeks. Adkins has led the Tigers to six wins in their last seven league games, including a 6-0 mauling of Bolton Wanderers on New Years’ Day.
