Sheffield United have been looking to make a marquee striker signing in the January transfer window.

The Star reported in November that both Shane Long and Jermain Defoe were targets but, with the former forcing his way into Southampton’s plans again and the latter on his way to Rangers, The Blades have been forced to cast their net a little wider.

Fortunately for Chris Wilder, however, there is one Premier League striker who would jump at the chance to move to Bramall Lane.

According to The Star, Gary Madine wants to join Sheffield United after being made available by Cardiff City.

The 28-year-old target-man, who joined Cardiff for £6 million a year ago (BBC) but has played just 32 minutes of Premier League football under Neil Warnock, is understood to have been keen on a move to Bramall Lane side for some time.

Interestingly, Madine spent time with United’s bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday between 2011 and 2015, scoring 28 goals in 113 games for The Owls.

He has a decent record in the Championship too, having netted 10 times for a struggling Bolton side in the first half of last season before his ill-fated move to South Wales.
