Dael Fry has shone in the Championship with Middlesbrough but could he step up to the Premier League with Burnley?

Burnley are keen to sign a Middlesbrough defender for the second time in the space of one year with the Daily Mail reporting that they are keen on England U21 international Dael Fry.

The Clarets paid a club-record £15 million for Boro captain Ben Gibson last summer but the highly-rated centre-back struggled badly during his debut season at Turf Moor. He played just 63 minutes of Premier League football with his sole appearance coming in Boxing Day’s 5-1 home defeat to Everton.

But despite Gibson’s struggles, Burnley have not been put off making a move for his former Riverside team-mate Fry.

A 21-year-old who has risen through the ranks at his boyhood club, TEAMtalk reported in November that Fry had caught the eye of clubs like Chelsea, Celtic and Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur.

And Burnley now appear to be in the race. Boro could be forced to cash in with the parachute payments running out and Fry won’t be short of offers after impressing both at centre-half and at left-back.

Fry, who is heavily admired for his ball-playing style, has played 11 times for England’s U21s.
