Jay Rodriguez is reportedly heading back to the Premier League with Burnley after a fine Championship season with West Bromwich Albion.
Burnley are on the verge of bringing West Bromwich Albion striker Jay Rodriguez back to Turf Moor after triggering the £10 million release clause in his contract, according to the Mail.
At the end of June, West Brom’s technical director Luke Dowling sounded very confident that the star striker would be staying at The Hawthorns, pointing out to the Express and Star that Rodriguez had no expressed any desire to force a move out of the Championship club.
Just a week later, however, and it seems the Baggies are on the verge of losing Rodriguez after all.
The one-time England international was born in Burnley and started his career at Turf Moor too. In total, he scored 41 goals in 128 games for The Clarets before leaving his hometown for Southampton.
Seven years later, however, Rodriguez is apparently on the verge of an emotional return to Lancashire. The Mail reports that Burnley have triggered his £10 million release clause with the 29-year-old now expected to join up with Sean Dyche’s side in Portugal once the negotiations and smaller details are all ironed out.
And this is the breakthrough Burnley fans were crying out for. Rodriguez is not only a sentimental signing but an inspired one too, giving Dyche a goal-scorer proven at Premier League level.
His impending exit is something of a disaster, however, for a West Brom side who have also lost Dwight Gayle since the end of last season.
