Premier League outfit Burnley have made a bid for Dael Fry, who shone in the Championship with Boro last season.
Burnley will have to pay at least £16 million for Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry after their bid for the England U21 international failed on Monday, as reported by the Teesside Gazette.
Strong, commanding, versatile and superb with the ball at his feet, it is no surprise Fry has caught the eye of clubs higher up the footballing pyramid after an excellent breakthrough season at the Riverside.
Burnley might not have the best experience when it comes to signing Boro defenders, Ben Gibson has been nothing short of a disaster after all, but that has not stopped The Clarets from making an £8 million offer to bring Fry to Turf Moor.
According to the Gazette, Middlesbrough think Fry is worth at least double the offer Burnley have made, inspired by Bristol City’s £22 million sale of Adam Webster to demand top dollar for their prized asset. Sean Dyche’s side will have to break their transfer record.
And, for what it’s worth, the Middlesbrough-born 21-year-old is happy to stay at a club he joined 13 years ago.
Fry should thrive under the leadership of new manager Jonathan Woodgate, himself a top class centre-half in his playing days. Woodgate believes the 6ft 4ins stalwart is guaranteed to play Premier League football in the future but he’ll be praying that Fry has another year in the Championship in him.
Yet with Burnley potentially set for a massive cash windfall if James Tarkowski seals a move to Leicester City, they could make an offer Boro will struggle to refuse.
