Leeds United face a challenge luring Groningen striker Mimoun Mahi to Elland Road from the Eredivisie with Nottingham Forest one of many sides keen.
After months of speculation, Mimoun Mahi could finally be about to move to England this month, although where he will end up is anyone’s guess.
According to The Sun, Nottingham Forest, Swansea City and Stoke City are all interested in the Groningen striker and would consider triggering his £2 million release clause. And the Yorkshire Evening Post claimed last week that Leeds United are also keen on the jet-heeled Moroccan international.
But Mahi could have already been playing in the Championship, if Bristol City had not turned their attention elsewhere.
According to the Bristol Post, the Robins were interested in striking a deal for the 23-year-old after his enjoyed a superb breakthrough season with Groningen in 2016/17, netting 17 times in the Dutch top flight.
Instead, however, Bristol City turned their attention elsewhere and eventually pulled off a £5.3 million club-record deal to sign Famara Diedhiou from Ligue 1 side Angers instead, per the BBC. The 25-year-old’s has been out since October with knee ligament damage but made a real impression prior to that, netting five times in 11 championship starts.
But with Diedhiou set to return soon, and Bobby Reid enjoying the most prolific spell of his career in a new-look centre-forward role, there is no real reason for Bristol City to make another move for Mahi in January.
With the striker admitting that he has probably played his last game for the club, will Championship rivals Leeds be the ones to finally bring Mahi to England?
