Rangers certainly seem to be stepping up their pursuit of a new centre-half.

The Scottish Sun stated on Tuesday afternoon that the Scottish Premiership giants were targeting Brighton defender Connor Goldson, who had made just two Premier League starts in the 2017/18 season.

The 25-year-old underwent heart surgery in February 2017 and, when he recovered, could not find a way to overthrow Chris Hughton’s first-choice defensive pairing of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy.

But, in an update provided by The Argus, Brighton are not willing to simply hand Goldson over to Rangers.

It is understood that Steven Gerrard’s side have now made a formal offer to sign the Wolverhampton-born powerhouse but it has been rejected as the bid fell well below Brighton’s valuation.

The ball is now back in Rangers’ court and time will tell whether they are willing to increase their offer for a defender who might have been handpicked to replace the departing David Bates at Ibrox.

Fortunately, Rangers have shown that they are willing to back Gerrard in the transfer market. The Sun claimed that they made a £4 million bid for Swansea City forward Oli McBurnie last week, which would have made him their most expensive signing since Nikica Jelavic arrived in 2010.
