Bolton Wanderers missed out on Liverpool’s Cameron Brannagan to League One rivals Fleetwood Town in January.

That Bolton Wanderers missed out on signing highly-rated Liverpool youngster Cameron Brannagan on loan in January was disappointing enough. The fact that he then moved to automatic promotion rivals Fleetwood Town instead added insult to the injury (Liverpool Echo).
Eventually, however, Phil Parkinson’s Trotters had the last laugh as Bolton secured a place in the Championship at the expense of their North West rivals. And, according to The Sun, they are hoping to get second time lucky with another approach for Brannagan this summer.
After all, Bolton need to strengthen their squad ahead of a challenging return to the second tier. And, with the club only saved from administration in November, it is safe to say that funds are hardly unlimited.
Therefore, the prospect of signing the talented midfielder on loan will certainly appeal.
Second time lucky?
And the move could benefit Liverpool too, at least in the long-term. The 21-year-old is one of the most highly-rated players in the club’s prosperous youth academy but his opportunities at the Merseyside club have been limited thus far.

In total, Brannagan has featured just nine times in Liverpool colours, despite manager Jurgen Klopp (above) telling the Liverpool Echo that the Salford-born starlet has ‘everything you need for a midfield player’.
Brannagan returned to Liverpool’s under-23 squad recently after Fleetwood were defeated 1-0 on aggregate by Bradford City in the League One play-off semi-finals.

Yet, it appears that a short-term move away from Merseyside is the logical next step in his development. And Bolton should be only too obliging.
