Report: Bolton Wanderers interested in Victor Anichebe

Bolton Wanderers need a striker to replace Gary Madine for their Championship survival push and former Sunderland powerhouse Anichebe fits the bill.

Bolton Wanderers have picked up two mightily impressive results since losing their talismanic top scorer Gary Madine to Cardiff City for £6 million on transfer deadline day.

After Sammy Ameobi inspired a 1-0 win against Bristol City, Phil Parkinson’s side followed that up with a decent draw with high-flying Fulham.

But with the next highest scorer in Bolton’s squad Ameobi, with just four, it makes perfect sense that the Wanderers would be delving into the free-agent market for potential additions outside of the transfer window.

And according to the Birmingham Mail, Bolton could offer Victor Anichebe a route back to England after a short and forgettable stint in China with Beijing Enterprises.

The 29-year-old is now a free agent after his contract with the Chinese Super League club expired and could certainly do a job in the Championship for Parkinson’s relegation threatened Wanderers.

Interestingly, Anichebe has never played in England’s second tier having spent the entirety of his career in the Premier League prior to Sunderland’s relegation at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Anichebe is far from a prolific goalscorer, however, managing just 27 strikes in 197 league appearances for Sunderland, West Brom and Everton.

But he could give Bolton a physical presence in attack and, at his best, he could bully defenders in the Championship and get the best out of the gifted technical players around him like Zach Clough and Ameobi.
