Carles Gil has not played for Aston Villa since they dropped into the Championship and is reportedly closing in on a permanent move to Spain.

It seems that Carles Gil is on his way out of Aston Villa after all this summer.
The diminutive Spaniard has spent the last two seasons back in La Liga with Deportivo La Coruna and, when returning to the Riazor for a second spell a year ago, it was understood that the Galician outfit would be made to sign Gil permanently at the end of the campaign thanks to a compulsory purchase clause in his contract.
But when Depor were relegated from the Spanish top flight, that came into question, with some speculating that dropping into the second tier gave them a loophole to opt out of the deal.

The former Valencia man is expected to complete a £2 million move to the 2004 Champions League semi-finalists.
Gil has not played a game for Villa since their relegation from the Premier League two years ago. The 25-year-old play-maker has huge potential, as shown by those memorable strikes against Bournemouth and Sunderland, but appeared to lack the physicality and fitness to survive in English football.

Deportivo’s sporting director Carmelo del Pozo told Marca earlier this week: “Carles Gil’s compulsory purchase will be effective, then we will see if he wants to play in Segunda and if he is convinced of playing in Segunda.”
If Gil can put the injury problems that ruined 2017/18 behind him, he will surely be one of the standout players in Spain’s second tier.
