Alex McCarthy is reportedly up for sale at Southampton and Premier League newcomers Aston Villa need a new goalkeeper.

Aston Villa have turned to Alex McCarthy as they look to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer with Southampton putting the England international up for sale, according to Sky Sports.
Newly promoted Villa have spent over £50 million on new signings already with the likes of Wesley Moraes, Jota and Kortney Hause enhancing Dean Smith’s squad in preparation for life back in the Premier League.
But despite links with the likes of Jack Butland, Edouard Mendy and Neil Etheridge, the Midland giants are yet to solve their real problem position.
Villa haven’t had a reliable goalkeeper for years and doubts persist about whether Jed Steer, Orjan Nyland or January signing Lovre Kalinic have the required quality to take on the challenge in England’s top flight.
And Sky claims that the Premier League newcomers have now turned to McCarthy with Southampton ready to cash in on a player who lost his place to Angus Gunn midway through last season.

The 29-year-old is one of the division’s most underrated ‘keepers and he deserves a chance to prove himself long-term as a number one. He’d certainly be a substantial upgrade on Nyland and Kalinic with his excellent reflexes and ability to command his area perhaps making McCarthy the final piece of Aston Villa’s jigsaw.
The Standard reported in June that McCarthy was keen to join Liverpool this summer but, with Simon Mignolet now expected to stay at Anfield, the trial has since grown cold.
