Sunderland’s relegation to League One could see George Honeyman leave the Stadium of Light with Aston Villa, Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday keen.
George Honeyman might be a boyhood Sunderland fan who has spent his entire career with the Black Cats but even the most ardent supporter would probably forgive the 23-year-old if he decided to jump ship following the club’s relegation to League One.
Fortunately for Honeyman, there are no shortage of clubs willing to give him the chance to progress elsewhere.
The Sun states that Aston Villa and Fulham have joined Sheffield Wednesday in targeting the energetic midfielder, who has perhaps been the brightest spark in a dreadful Sunderland side who have now suffered successive relegations.
Honeyman has just one year left on his deal at the Stadium of Light, meaning a Sunderland side who are in huge amounts of debt may be forced to sell.
The Sun, however, claims that no players will be allowed to leave until Stuart Donald’s takeover of the club is sanctioned by the EFL.
But, along with Honeyman, Sunderland can expect to field offers for Paddy McNair (below) and Lynden Gooch too. The young duo have also emerged from a nightmare season with their reputations unscathed.
Both Aston Villa and Fulham will take part in the end of season Championship play-offs, meaning there is a chance that Honeyman could be playing Premier League football next season.
