Carles Gil has spent the last two years on loan at La Liga strugglers Deportivo La Coruna from Championship giants Aston Villa.

It is hard to believe that Carles Gil is still technically an Aston Villa player.

The skilful Spaniard has not made a single first-team appearance in claret and blue for almost two years, having been on loan at Deportivo La Coruna since the start of the 2016/17 season.

But according to the Birmingham Mail, Villa are hoping to finally get Gil off their books in the summer transfer window.

It is understood that Villa are praying that Deportivo will decide to make his temporary deal into a permanent one, but that is easier said than done.

The 25-year-old former Valencia man, who joined Villa in January 2015 for £3.2 million, has endured an injury interrupted spell at the Riazor and has made just six La Liga starts this season, failing to score a single goal and producing just one assist.

Gil has not started since a 5-0 thrashing at Real Sociedad in early February which cost manager Fernando Vasquez his job.

The former AC Milan and Holland legend Clarence Seedorf has since taken over at the relegation threated Depor but, in that time, Gil has played just six minutes of league football.

And with Depor hardly awash with cash, it seems unlikely that they would devote a chunk of their summer budget on signing Gil.

Villa, then, may have to find a different buyer for a player who demonstrated a penchant for the spectacular in English football but struggled to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League.
